Data published by the ABI showed that a record 4.7 million people were covered by PMI through their employers in 2023-the highest figure it has recorded in over three decades.
Moreover, ABI announced a 7% growth in the number of individual and workplace health insurance policies taken out. A total of 6.2 million people were covered with policies featuring rapid diagnosis and high-quality treatments for acute medical conditions. This rise indicates an increase of 411,000 policyholders compared with the same period last year and demonstrates a higher demand for private healthcare.
There was also a strong growth in private health insurance benefits, where claims about increased by 21% for individual and employer-provided policies to 1.7 million claims. In addition, the total workplace claims jumped 26% to 1.3 million.
In 2023, insurers paid out a record £3.57 billion in private health insurance claims, a rise of 21% compared to last year. Payments are close to an astonishing £9.8 million every day. Payments from employer-based policies increased significantly, too, by 26% to £2.27 billion.
